The AI Revolution Is Leaving 2 Billion People Behind—And Corporations Can’t Ignore It Anymore
By Sheares Benjamin

As someone who has worked with social impact organizations across 85 countries, I’ve witnessed firsthand a truth that keeps me up at night: while artificial intelligence promises to revolutionize how we address global challenges, the very organizations doing the most critical work on the ground—particularly in the Global South—are being left behind in the AI revolution. This isn’t just a technical gap; it’s a credibility crisis that threatens to widen the chasm between those with resources and those working directly with the communities that need them most.
The numbers tell a stark story. According to Microsoft’s 2025 Global AI adoption data, 24.7% of the working-age population in the Global North now uses AI tools, compared to just 14.1% in the Global South. Meanwhile, Africa accounts for less than 1% of global data center capacity despite being home to 18% of the world’s population. For mission-driven organizations competing for funding, partnerships, and global attention, this digital divide translates directly into a credibility gap that no amount of good intentions can overcome.
The Real Cost of the Digital Divide
When our team at Bombshell Impact launched the Sky Is Not The Limit Social Impact Grant in mid-2025, we received 923 applications from 85 countries. What struck me wasn’t just the volume—it was the pattern. Organizations in the Global South consistently demonstrated deep community expertise, innovative approaches to complex problems, and proven impact. Yet their proposals often lacked the polish, visual sophistication, and strategic framing that funders have come to expect in an increasingly competitive landscape.
This isn’t about capability—it’s about access. While organizations in North America and Europe have increasingly adopted AI-powered design tools, grant-writing assistants, and strategic planning platforms, their counterparts in the Global South are still struggling with basic connectivity, limited access to professional development, and the prohibitive cost of design and marketing services.
The implications extend far beyond aesthetics. In a world where first impressions are increasingly digital, organizations that can’t produce professional-quality materials face skepticism about their operational capacity, regardless of their actual track record. This creates a vicious cycle: those doing the most impactful work often have the least capacity to communicate that impact effectively, which limits their ability to secure resources to build that capacity.
The Corporate Responsibility Imperative
Here’s where corporate responsibility becomes more than a buzzword—it becomes a strategic imperative. Companies investing billions in AI development have both the moral obligation and the business incentive to ensure their innovations serve global development goals, not just Silicon Valley profit margins.
The good news? Many are stepping up. The Partnership for Global Inclusivity on AI, launched in 2024, brings together major tech companies committing over $100 million to expand AI access in developing countries. Anthropic is providing up to $1 million in API access for government projects focused on sustainable development goals. Google is investing $120 million in AI education in local languages. Microsoft is pouring $12 billion into AI infrastructure in the Global South.
But infrastructure alone won’t bridge the gap. As the upcoming India AI Impact Summit 2026 emphasizes, we need a holistic approach that addresses three critical areas: compute (access to AI tools), capacity (technical training), and context (locally relevant datasets and applications). This is where marketing and design agencies serving the social impact sector have a unique role to play.
Practical Applications: AI Tools That Level the Playing Field
The revolution isn’t coming—it’s already here, and it’s more accessible than most organizations realize. Today’s AI landscape offers unprecedented opportunities for Global South organizations to compete on equal footing:
Design Democratization
Free platforms like Canva for Nonprofits now offer AI-powered design tools that previously required expensive professional designers. Organizations can create compelling grant proposals, social media content, and marketing materials that meet international standards—all without specialized training or significant budget.
Multilingual Capability
Meta’s “No Language Left Behind” model delivers translations in 200 languages, including indigenous languages. This enables organizations to maintain cultural authenticity while communicating with global funders—a critical balance that previously required expensive translation services.
Content Creation and Strategy
AI writing assistants can help draft compelling narratives, refine messaging, and develop strategic communications plans. When used thoughtfully, these tools amplify authentic voices rather than replacing them—helping organizations articulate their impact in ways that resonate with diverse audiences.
The Path Forward: Strategic Recommendations for Organizations
Drawing from two decades of strategic communications work and my experience evaluating hundreds of social impact organizations globally, here’s my framework for leveraging AI to bridge the digital divide:
1. Start with Context, Not Tools
The most common mistake I see is organizations adopting AI tools without first clarifying their strategic communications objectives. What story are you telling? Who needs to hear it? What action do you want them to take? AI should amplify your strategy, not define it.
2. Build Capacity, Don’t Just Buy Services
While outsourcing design and marketing can be valuable, sustainable impact requires building internal capacity. Invest in training your team to use AI tools effectively. This creates long-term independence rather than ongoing dependency.
3. Prioritize Authentic Voice Over Polish
AI can help you communicate more professionally, but it should never strip away what makes your organization unique. The most compelling proposals I’ve reviewed maintain authentic community voice while meeting professional standards. Use AI to enhance clarity and visual appeal, not to homogenize your message.
4. Leverage South-South Collaboration
Some of the most innovative AI applications I’ve seen come from organizations in the Global South learning from each other. Regional networks sharing strategies, tools, and lessons learned can accelerate adoption far more effectively than top-down knowledge transfer from the Global North.
The Business Case for Corporate Engagement
For corporate leaders reading this: addressing the AI divide isn’t charity—it’s smart business. The organizations you’re helping today are your future partners in addressing climate change, public health crises, and economic development. By investing in their capacity now, you’re building a more robust ecosystem of implementers who can help achieve your own ESG goals.
Moreover, as stakeholder scrutiny intensifies and consumers increasingly demand authentic social impact, partnerships with credible Global South organizations provide legitimacy that can’t be purchased through marketing campaigns. But these partnerships only work when your potential partners have the communications capacity to engage as equals.
The data from Benevity’s 2025 State of Corporate Purpose Report shows that nearly two-thirds of companies significantly shifted their purpose strategies last year, driven by stakeholder scrutiny and a need to demonstrate authentic impact. Organizations that build genuine, capacity-enhancing partnerships with Global South entities—rather than extractive or performative relationships—will be best positioned to meet these evolving expectations.
Looking Ahead: The Mission Control Approach
At Bombshell Impact, we’ve developed what we call the “Mission Control” approach to supporting social impact organizations. Just as mission control supports astronauts in doing unprecedented work in challenging environments, we provide the strategic communications infrastructure that allows organizations to focus on their earth-changing work.
This means combining AI-powered tools with human expertise to deliver:
• Marketing Support that amplifies your authentic voice while meeting professional standards
• Design Support that creates visually compelling materials without sacrificing cultural authenticity
• Funding Support that positions your organization competitively for grants and partnerships
The goal isn’t dependency—it’s capacity building. We work alongside organizations to implement AI tools effectively while developing internal capabilities that last long after our engagement ends.
A Call to Action
The AI revolution will either exacerbate existing inequalities or become the great equalizer—the choice is ours. As marketers, designers, corporate leaders, and impact professionals, we have both the tools and the responsibility to ensure AI serves social good.
For organizations in the Global South: Don’t wait for permission or perfect conditions. Start experimenting with free AI tools today. Build networks with peers facing similar challenges. Invest in your team’s digital literacy as seriously as you invest in programmatic expertise.
For corporations and funders: Look beyond polished proposals to the substance of impact. Provide not just funding but capacity-building support. Partner with organizations like ours that can help bridge the gap sustainably.
The digital divide between Global North and South isn’t inevitable—it’s a design choice. And design choices can be redesigned. The question is whether we have the collective will to do so before the gap becomes unbridgeable.
The work is urgent. The tools are available. The time is now.
